How to Get Diatomaceous Earth Out of a Swimming Pool?

Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters use a powder that attaches itself onto a filter grid inside the filter. If the filter is damaged, the DE powder can pass through the filter and back out of the return jet. In turn, your pool turns cloudy and looks muddy – not exactly inviting for a quick dip! To help you get DE back out of your pool quickly and carefully, read on.

  • Turn off the filter and allow the earth to settle to the bottom of the pool. Most of it should sink to the bottom. Leaving the filter on runs the risk of recirculating the earth which makes the water appear cloudy.

  • Connect the pool hose to the vacuum assembly. Drop it in the pool. Connect the opposite end of the pool hose into the pool skimmer. Build up the pressure in the vacuum by pumping the filter handle three or four times.

  • Connect another pool hose from the release valve opening located near the bottom of the pool. Move this into the nearest drain in your backyard. When you vacuum, the water should be coming out of this opening.

  • Turn the release valve port to the backwash setting. Turn on the filter. Begin to vacuum the pool. Move slowly to prevent stirring up the dirt.

  • You may need to vacuum the pool in increments, allowing the DE to settle to the bottom of the pool each time.
